Not a book to start your journey with but a good one to explain what you experience along the way. William Johnston wrote many books on the theme of contemplative Christianity and is also able to sympathetically highlight similarities / important differences between the Christian and Buddhist traditions in this area. I especially liked his analogy that in silent wordless prayer, whether of the 'Cloud' type or plain sitting in zazen, that the person or hardware is doing the same thing but the rea..more

The book The Cloud of Unknowing is a classic of early English literature. The unknown author, a contemplative, sees prayer as going into cloud of unknowing while pushing everything else into a cloud of forgetting. Johnston takes that book and explores the mysticism of the book. It is a wonderful help to anyone who has read the book Cloud of Unknowning.
